The AgJOBS legislation has solid bipartisan support in the United States Senate from a majority of Senators. While AgJOBS fell short of a “supermajority” of 60 votes today, it is clear that we have a clear majority for our bipartisan solution.
Given the crushing defeat of the competing partisan guest worker proposal by Senators Chambliss and Kyl (defeated 77-21), it is now clearer than ever that partisan solutions that fail to address the concerns of both employers and workers have little support in this U.S. Senate. Senators understand that there will be no reform to rationalize our immigration system unless there is true cooperation across the aisle. Senators Craig and Kennedy have a model that works.
Many Senators preferred not to include any immigration amendments on the appropriations bill. Yet, under the toughest circumstances, AgJOBS remained strong. AgJobs is clearly the only viable, bipartisan solution for our nation's agricultural industry. It places farm workers at the front of the immigration debate. No genuine immigration reform proposal has gotten this far.
Thank you for all your help! We've gotten this far---let's continue to work hard to get AgJOBS passed in this session. We'll keep you updated. I've attached the UFW's AgJOBS press release and the list of today's Senate votes below.
